Purbeck District Council licenses the following premises
involving animals:
- Boarding catteries and kennels
- Pet shops selling animals
- Dog breeders breeding five or more litters in a year
- Riding schools
- Keepers of dangerous wild animals
- Zoos
Application forms, details of current licence fees and
information on standard licence conditions can be obtained from the
Environmental Services Section. The Section can
also supply a list of those premises currently licensed by the
Authority. Officers from this Section inspect these premises
annually to ensure that they comply with national minimal
standards. The standards relate to structure, safety, security,
infectious disease control, and the suitability of the licence
holder. The aim is to ensure:
- minimum standards of welfare for animals
- prevent a spread of disease and
- the safety of the public visiting these premises
Visits are also undertaken following complaints.
The advice to anyone using these premises is:
- always check they are licensed by the Council, and ask to see
the current licence .
- always inspect the premises prior to leaving your pet, buying
an animal, or taking a riding lesson
- always ensure that riding schools have current public liability
insurance
Other premises open to the public, such as farm parks where
animals normally thought to be domesticated in this country are on
display, are not licensed. They are, however, regularly inspected
by Environmental Services staff to ensure compliance with all
relevant legislation.
