A host of activities is taking place across Purbeck to
celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, from Saturday 23rd February until
Sunday 9th March
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent
working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade
for farmers and workers in the developing world. The aim of the
Fairtrade Fortnight is to raise awareness of the Fairtrade Mark and
encourage more people to buy Fairtrade products. This year’s
campaign message is ‘Change Today, Choose Fairtrade’.
The Purbeck Fairtrade Network co-ordinates the
promotion of Fairtrade across Purbeck. This has successfully
enabled the District to achieve Fairtrade District status and both
Swanage and Wareham to achieve Fairtrade Town status. The
network encourages businesses to sell Fairtrade products in their
retail and catering outlets and businesses or organisations to use
Fairtrade products in the work place, school or church.
The Fairtrade week events started with a
Fairtrade Breakfast on Saturday 23rd February at Harry’s
Bar, Wareham with servings of FREE coffee.
A Fairtrade Wine Tasting, organised by the
Co-operative Foodstore, will take place on Tuesday 26th
February, at 7.30 pm at Wareham Town Hall. Book your place at
the kiosk in the Wareham Co-operative store.
Fashion shows in Swanage and Wareham, will be
taking place – look out for further details. People can also
enter the Fairtrade Prize Draw by collecting 6 Fairtrade Stickers
from participating cafes in Swanage and Wareham.
The annual Six-A-Side Fairtrade Football
Tournament returns at the Purbeck Sports Centre, Wareham, with the
final taking place on Friday 7th March.
The final kicks off at 4.00 pm, ending at 5.30
pm latest. As well as a prize for the winners of the
football, there will be a prize for the team who sport the best
fancy dress outfit.
The Football event is jointly organised by
Purbeck Sports Centre and the Purbeck Fairtrade Network. The
winning goal-scoring team will receive the Goldy’s Fairtrade
Six-a-Side Trophy, presented by Jenny Goldsack.
