Swanage Town Trails

image: Swanage PierThere are three walking trails in Swanage and leaflets are available from either the Swanage Museum and Heritage Centre, Swanage Tourist Information Centre or Purbeck Information and Heritage Centre in Wareham.

Be green and leave the car at home, Swanage can be reached by bus, train or boat.

The Town Trail – Walk 1

Stroll through the historic heart of Swanage past the Town Hall (whose front was once a famous London landmark), then drop in at the Victorian Railway Station and board a steam train for a memorable trip to Corfe Castle.

The Stone Trail – Walk 2

Follow the stone trail along the ‘Bankers’, where in the old days the quarried stone was stacked high for shipping to London for docks, bridges and street paving. The traffic wasn’t all one way though and a Gothic clock tower brought back from London Bridge, now looks out across Swanage’s beautiful bay. Also visit the fully restored Victorian Pier.

The Victorian Trail – Walk 3

Walk via the coast path up to Durlston Country Park past the coastguard cottages and scenes of violent shipwrecks. In Victorian days the simple quarrying village of Swanage was transformed into a thriving seaside resort. Durlston’s unique Greta Globe and ‘Castle’ restaurant were built for the benefit of the visitors who flocked here on steam trains and paddle steamers.
